Borrowing Eggs

A couple of Sundays ago we pulled into our driveway and were met by two of the neighbor kids. The little girl handed me the note below.

I quickly came inside, took an egg out of the refrigerator, padded it with a paper towel and put it into the plastic cup provided by the little boy. Off they went across the yard to their house.

(Before I forget, make sure you click on the photo to see the scripture on the egg carton.) Back to borrowing eggs..... I am so thankful that my neighbor felt comfortable asking me. Sure we go to church together. Sure our kids play together all the time. But how many people ask to borrow and egg or a cup of sugar from their neighbor anymore? I think it is sad that it doesn't happen very often.

First, stores are open 24 hours a day now. It used to be that if you ran short on an ingredient and it was after 6:00 or the weekend, then you had to improvise. Second, we don't know our neighbors anymore. Don't you think that is true? Am I going to ask my neighbor for an egg if I have barely spoken two words to her in the past? We are too busy to get to know the people next door.

Thankfully, we live in a friendly neighborhood. When we moved in everyone took the time to come introduce themselves. We are not afraid to ask favors of each other because we know each other. Also, we live a few miles from town. Running to the store for eggs is not convenient. So, if you need an egg, sugar, milk....come on over. And I hope you will sit on my porch and visit for a spell while you are here!

{"Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you." Matthew 5:42}

Glad you had an egg she could "Borrow". Very true that we don't feel comfortable asking our neighbors for favors. Don't know that I would ask the banker's wife next door to borrow an egg, even though I have lived here for 24 years. Good for your neighborhood.

Love the scripture on the egg carton. How neat! Thanks for helping your neighbor like this.

Come over to visit me when you have a minute. I have a little something for you... No, it's not an egg or cup of sugar!

I love that your egg carton has a scripture on it...and am so thankful you have a neighbor that is close enough to borrow an egg - to often that closeness is just not there anymore. I love that I have neighbors that I can borrow from too!

I am glad to be inspiring to someone. Yes, it was me who borrowed the egg. I am truly thankful to have "good neighbors". I just moved here three and one half months ago myself, and feel very blessed to have such a nice group of people close by. Yes, we have a unique neighborhood by todays standards. I owe you a dozen eggs and a world of thanks.

Good neighbors are priceless!

I was at your sister in law, Pam's house last night. :) She talks about you and your blog fairly often. A few minutes ago I was on Daisy Cottage and saw your post, then recognized your name instantly!

Sweet post, Vanessa! I love our neighborhood like that too, we borrow a little here and there, not too much, but we do! One time my neighbor was canning and ran out of lids...Yep, I had them for her! When Jessica was young ALL the neighbor ladies came for eggs, but not to borrow, they had to buy them by the dozen from Jessica and her 41 laying hens! (All individually named and "schooled" by Jess!). I've never seen an egg carton with a Bible verse! Where did that come from???
