Looking Back

What a busy day! I shouldn't even be on the computer. There is always laundry needing to be done, piles of papers from school to be sorted, things to get ready for tomorrow....but my stress is always lessened a bit by doing something creative.

Last week I stopped by the public library to check out a book. They always have a couple racks of discarded books and magazines for sale for 10 cents or something like that. This day, on a separate table, was a stack of magazine with a sign above them that said, "Vintage Magazines for sale $2 each." Must be special if they want $2 for them.
Ummm, yeah! I know you can't read the date on this beautiful magazine. Let me just tell you. October 1917. I ended up buying four magazines - three from 1917 and one from 1935. If you have never had a chance to look at vintage magazines such as these, you are missing out. I can't get enough of them! The illustrations are gorgeous; the advertisements are intriguing and the articles are quite informative!
So, even back in 1917 mother's needed a little help in guiding their children. I guess "positive parenting" is not a new term. (Remember to click on any of the pictures to get a better view. I should have scanned some of this. I can't scan full pages with my scanner because these magazines are huge!)
I love this! "Doing Things With Your Clothes: How to make something new from something old." The country was at war and times were tough. One of the ideas is to use old black gloves and some black velvet to make a pretty handbag.
I thought this was cute advertisement for blankets.
How about a new car? Just look at that price!

There is so much more I want to share. Does anyone know what copyright laws are regarding magazines of this age? I would love to scan some of the advertising images to share with everyone. I think that is okay to do, but I am really not sure. Oh, there is this full page of Halloween paper dolls. You will love them! I need to know the laws and I need a great big scanner. I'll try to work on that.

From old to new....In the spring I shared life:beautiful with you. It is a relatively new magazine. It is full of decorating ideas, recipes, heartwarming stories...
After picking up the spring issue in a bookstore I actually subscribed. Above is the summer issue that came out in May.
Isn't this a pretty display?
This is part of a story on hosting a box lunch social. Wouldn't that be fun?

In the back of the current issue is says to expect the fall issue on August 12. I was disappointed when that day came and went without a new magazine. I called the publisher and the kind woman explained to me just how expensive it is to do a magazine of this quality. Unfortunately, they were unable to put together a fall issue, but she assured me that they were working on a fabulous holiday issue due out in early November.

I really believe we need to support this publication. It is beautiful, very top quality and is faith-based. I love seeing the beautiful photographs with scripture to go along with them. It is nice to read columns from Dr. Dobson, Gary Smalley and Ellie Kay (plus many more). If you can scrape up an extra $20 I would encourage you to go to www.lifebeautifulmagazine.com and subscribe. I have noticed lately that their website isn't fully functioning, but you can still subscribe. Let's send a message to them that we want their magazine to flourish.

Whew! I always plan on doing a short post and it turns into so much more. I hope you've stuck with me through this whole thing.

{"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Philippians 4:8}

I'm not sure about the copyright laws...but I love vintage paper dolls and would love to see the Halloween dolls :)
I will check out that magazine, it looks great and it's hard to find a faith-based magazine that's so well-done. Thanks for the tip :)

What a wonderful find you have! Would not even think of looking at the library. You have such a wonderful knack for finding the unusual. Keep it up! We enjoy it all.
